Some number of people have asked what movies I am looking forward to in 2012 and I thought it sounded like a fun exercise to really look at what would be coming out. The major Hollywood studios have 116 movies with scheduled release dates set for the coming year. Nearly half that many will be added over the course of the year as distributors pick-up indie fare from the different festivals. It is really hard to know this far in advance what is going to jump out next fall or during "awards season", but that doesn't mean I can't tell the future a little bit and predict what I know will get me to the theaters and what I hope will get me there.
We All Know We Will Be There:
The Avengers - May 4th
Men In Black 3 - May 25th
The Amazing Spiderman - July 3rd
The Dark Knight Rises - July 20th
The Hobbit - December 14th
It does not take a fortune teller to know that these will be 5 of the top 10 highest grossing movies of the year. In fact, the only one that would be in any real danger of not making the top 5 or 6 would be Men In Black 3, which I could see only doing so-so if the reviews are only so-so (having said that, it seems like only a fool would bet against Will Smith).
If You Have Pre-Teen Children, You Will Be There:
Dr. Seuss' The Lorax - March 2nd
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted - June 8th
Brave - June 22nd
Ice Age: Continental Drift - July 13th
Rise of the Guardians - November 21st
If you haven't heard of Brave, you will soon. It is Disney's big animated feature for the summer and looks like a cross between How To Train Your Dragon and Sword and the Stone (if it is as good as either then hooray for Disney). Rise of the Guardians is the one that looks like it may be really fun. It is a superhero team movie, only the superheroes are Santa Clause, the Easter bunny and other fictional character who are going to have to band together to face a villain who is trying to monetize all of the holidays. It could be really good.
If You Have Boys, You May Well Be There:
John Carter - March 9th
The Wrath of the Titans - March 30th
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - March 30th
The Pirates! Band of Misfits - April 27th
Battleship - May 11th
GI Joe: Retaliation - June 29th
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days - August 3rd
Hopefully, one or two of these can be avoided until they come out on DVD (The Wrath of the Titans, Battleship and Diary of a Wimpy Kid for me, you may have your own list), but if you have boys ages 7 to 13 you are probably going to these movies and you will more than likely enjoy half of them.
On a side note, the one I am most excited about is Pirates! Watch the trailer and tell me it doesn't look hilarious ...
Date Night Fare:
One For The Money - January 27th
This Means War - February 14th
The Hunger Games - March 23rd
Rock of Ages - June 1st
Whether in the theaters or on DVD, you kind of know who you will be watching these movies with.
Another side note here, both Dana (my wife) and I have read the book One For The Money and we can tell you from the previews they aren't doing it anything like the character in the book. Maybe it will still be good, but it is not even close to the way it was written.
Date Night Fare If You Are Married To Dana:
The Bourne Legacy - August 3rd
Total Recall - August 3rd
The Expendables 2 - August 17th
Resident Evil: Retribution - September 14th
Taken 2 - October 5th
What can I say, we love the bad action movies.
I May Be Going Alone, Depending On The Reviews:
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence - February 2nd
Prometheus - June 8th
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - June 15th
Dredd - September 21st
Red Dawn - November 2nd
World War Z - December 12th
Django Unchained - December 25th
Zombies, aliens, vampires, sci fi and Quentin Terrantino. Who knows what these will end up being, but Mel Brooks' son wrote World War Z and it stars Brad Pitt (and he is dreamy) so that one should be fun. And, who doesn't want to watch a movie about Abraham Lincoln hunting vampires? No one.
So there you go. As the year progresses I am certain some of these movies will drift into the forgotten and they will be replaced with movies yet unknown or something like that. But, as best as I can tell today, this has been our future.
